Not Just Blowing Smoke: The Implications of Medical Marijuana in the Construction Workplace.

With 23 states and the District of Columbia passing legislation that legalizes marijuana for medical or recreational use, employers are finding themselves negotiating a new landscape with many uncertainties on accommodating these legal changes. Employers are facing issues that will need to be addressed, including possible changes to their policies and procedures, drug testing practices and questions on how to address a positive drug test for employees using medical marijuana under a physician’s care. You may find you have many questions about the application of your current company policies in this new environment.  In this session Kathryn Gray will take us through the laws and their impact on employers, the work place, changes required for compliance, and  addressing your company’s safety requirements with particular emphasis on the construction industry. 

 This session will enable you to:

  • Discuss the legal impact, content and status of medical marijuana and recreational marijuana legislation and how these changes may affect your business.
  • Understand the rights and responsibilities of both the employer and the employee on various facets of enforcing drug-free workplace policies, including how to handle requested time off for addiction treatment.
  • Make a defensible risk analysis of your current policies and implement changes as needed for a drug-free workplace.
  • Evaluate drug-testing best practices for workplace accidents, worker’s compensation injuries and requirements for compliance with DOT or as a government contractor.
  • Earn 1.5 CPE Credits in the Field of Specialized Knowledge & Applications. This is a group-live program at the Basic level.  No prerequisites or advanced preparation required.
